ICAO 054 – Surveillance/Radar Control Course (7-8 Weeks)
Course Aim:
This course equips student air traffic controllers with the knowledge and skills necessary to earn a student certificate of competency for ICAO Approach Control using Surveillance/Radar equipment.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion, students will:
- Understand and apply radar control techniques, including vectoring, sequencing, separations, and phraseology.
- Safely manage air traffic within an approach and terminal control area with a workload of up to 25-28 movements per hour.
- Work effectively in a team environment while adhering to rules and regulations.
- Provide an orderly, efficient, and expeditious radar service.
Course Overview:
Training is divided into two phases: theoretical instruction followed by simulator-based practical applications.
Theoretical Subjects Include:
- Radar vectoring, sequencing, separations, strip marking, and coordination for approach services
- Handling military and VFR flights
- Runway changes and handling equipment failures such as transponder and communication failures
- Dealing with ACAS, special weather conditions, low visibility procedures (LVP)
- Traffic with priority needs and holding procedures
- Understanding different approach methods (e.g., ILS, NDB, VA)
- Incident/accident procedures and reporting methods
Practical Simulation:
Students will practice radar control in a simulated environment, handling arriving, departing, and overflying traffic with efficiency and safety. Emphasis is placed on traffic sequencing, coordination, and special occurrences such as equipment failures or priority needs.
Examination:
Students must achieve a minimum score of 70% in the final examination.
